The New Four Letter Word: C O O K

Friday, 30. April 2010 1:42

I love food.  I don’t however enjoy cooking it.  Fast food is a treat for us once in a while, but I love good homemade food.  My favorite dish would have to be my moms homemade Beef Barley Soup.  She gets it to just the right thickness and enough pepper that your lips are chapped by the time you finish your first bowl.  I’m not a big fan of vegetables, so I’ll admit that I also love a great barbecued steak, cooked to medium rare and very little sauce on it.  Give me that with a nice baked potatoe and a gallon of sour cream and I’m in heaven.

Day in My Life

Monday, 26. April 2010 5:41

Working from home has eased my schedule by hours.  Although I still have a full day, it doesn’t need to be so fast paced that I’m exhausted by 9pm.  I wake up around 6:30am to get myself fed and have a few minutes to myself.  I wake up my 4 year old daughter at 7am.  I get her fed and dressed and ready to go to school and by the time my boyfriend gets home from his midnight shift at 8, we just jump in the truck and we are off to school.  I work all day at my home office and take a few short breaks through the day to compose myself.  I stop working around 4pm and get some housework done or some grocery shopping.  We pick up our daughter from daycare at about 5:30 and we get home around 6:30, as we usually stop and visit grandma and go to the park for a little while.  The evenings consist of dinner, TV and an hour of convincing her it’s bedtime.  My boyfriend leaves for work and 10pm and as soon as he’s out the door, I’m in bed.  That is my day.

Meet a Legend

President Bill Clinton with Nelson Mandela, Ju...

Who would I want to meet?  There are so many people to choose for so many different reasons.  I always had a top five list in my head, so I’ll choose from those.  I would have to say that perhaps my number one would have to be Nelson Mandela.  It’s not for his accomplishments as President of South Africa, but more for his resilience as a person.  I find it fascinating that a man can spend 30 years in a prison cell not big enough to stretch out in, and once freed from this hell, be so willing to forgive the people who put you there and help to lead them and form them into good and tolerant citizens.  Forgiveness and tolerance are virtues that many people are lacking and everyone needs to learn and I people that Nelson Mandela is the epitome of both of these.

A Lifetime at Rogers

Tuesday, 20. April 2010 13:40

I started my first real part time job when I was 16 years old.  It involved calling magazine subscribers to verify their orders and it was very monotonous.  We had a script to follow and designated answers to various questions that may arise.  When I finished school, I was offered a full time position, and until 2 years ago had stayed with the company, only changing departments once.  My total time employed at Rogers was 15 years.  I can’t say that I liked my job, but I liked the people I worked with.  That is what kept me there for so long.  The benefits were great and the pay was mediocre.  I never would have left, but unfortunately, due to the economy, there were mass layoffs and I was one of them.  Luckily, it was a change for the better and I’m very happy with where I am now.

Birthday of a Mogul

Friday, 16. April 2010 3:40

While working for Rogers Media, the company had decided to celebrate the 75th birthday of the owner, Ted Rogers.  He was also the owner of our local Major League Baseball Team, The Toronto Blue Jays, which gave the company access to the Rogers Center (formerly, the SkyDome).  A facility that can hold approxamatley 60,000 people.  The entire field was set up a carnival atmosphere with games and clowns and food stands, all compliments of the company.  Then we were treated to a show from a Canadian Band, Glass Tiger, who were quite popular in the 80’s.  I was totally in my element and we all had such a fantastic day.  It’s nice to have a company give some appreciation to it’s employees.

Dream Destination

Tuesday, 13. April 2010 21:40

My ideal holiday would have to be Europe.  It wouldn’t matter much where I landed because I would take the opportunity to travel to all of the surrounding countries.  Drop me in Ireland and I’ll just travel east, one country at a time.  I am a huge history buff and although there are many places around me that have historical signifigance, I am enamoured with the history and architecture of European tales.  Scotland, London, Berlin, Czech Republic.  I am certain that pictures and stories do not do justice to these wonderful places and I would love to experience them for myself.  I’m sure I’ll get there soon enough.

First Vacation

Wednesday, 7. April 2010 17:39

Growing up, the only vacations I ever went on were with my parents and they were always to the same place; the east coast to visit grandparents.  I decided a few years ago that I deserved to give myself a vacation to somewhere new.  I had enough money saved that I could afford a resort vacation to Cuba for two.  After some consideration, I didn’t bring my boyfriend at the time; I brought my mother.  I went on vacation with mother as an adult and realized how much I enjoy her company.  I wouldn’t have mattered where we went, because it would have been the coolest place I’ve ever bDreaen.

What to do when something catches fire on the stove

Monday, 5. April 2010 8:43

Fires can happen at any time and almost anywhere. For example, you might decide that you’d like to cook up a delicious stir fry for yourself and maybe you’ll share it. You gather the ingredients and such and begin to cook it on the stove. However, the telephone rings, you run over and find it to be your long lost sister. Meanwhile, your stir fry has been sitting on the burner too long has dried out and how now caught fire! Your smoke detector goes off. You run back and what do you do? Fire extinguishers! You remember your fire safety class and grab the fire extinguisher and proceed to put out the horrible fire. All is well now, and make sure you remember to turn off the stove!

A New Journey

Sunday, 4. April 2010 7:39

I have recently started a new career working from home.  I was skeptical at first when a woman called me and offered me the job.  She had found my resume on a job board and thought that I would fit well in the position that she had available.  Although I was reluctant, thinking it was a scam, I went for the initial interview and another follow up after that.  I was offered the job, and now 4 month later, am working from home in what I consider to be the best job I’ve ever had.  The possibilities and future of this job are very exciting and I look forward to the future.
