Chi-Town

Thursday, 2. September 2010 1:53

I live in Chicago and there are so many cool things to see while you are here. There are a lot of gathering places, like bars and restaurants and every one of them is unique in their own right. But, the thing that I find coolest about Chicago is the public transportation. Public transportation cuts down on emissions, and gets everyone where they need to go for less money. The thing that I find coolest about it is that there aren’t nearly as many deaths from drunken driving accidents because people just take the “el” or one of the busses.

The Downside of 3D

Tuesday, 31. August 2010 9:37

3D is the latest craze that is invading the entertainment market, and it seems that every medium is trying their best to jump on it. Every film released these days seems to boast that it is “in 3D” and provides an exceptional viewing experience. This is not the case. Many films are simply being converted to 3D after they are completed, thus ruining the director’s original vision and creating a hectic and often headache-inducing viewing experience. Films like “Avatar” use the medium to its fullest extent, but it is easy to forget when watching shoddy 3D efforts such as “Clash of the Titans” and “The Last Airbender,” both converted after filming.

Famous Directors

Saturday, 28. August 2010 8:36

If I could have lunch with any three people I would have to choose three of my favorite film directors – Tim Burton, Stanley Kubrick and Sam Mendes. All three of them have inspired me to follow the career path I am pursuing, and I believe all three of them have created films that have transcended the commercial film medium into the realm of true art. Burton’s “Edward Scissorhands” is a perfect recreation of suburban paranoia mixed in with a delicate fairytale that is sure to break your heart. Kubrick’s “Shining” and “A Clockwork Orange” push boundaries for where a commercial project can really go – both equally terrifying and thought-provoking. And Mendes’s “Revolutionary Road” and “American Beauty” are both powerful examinations of ‘perfect’ suburban existence. I would love to hear how they got their start and get some pointers from them on how to achieve my career goals.

Mexican Fiesta

Tuesday, 24. August 2010 7:35

I have always had a slight obsession with Mexican food. Well, slight is an understatement. I could honestly eat it almost every day. There is something about it that I absolutely adore, and it isn’t limited to the standard taco dinner. Enchiladas, burritos, tamales, I like them all. It all goes down well with a perfectly made strawberry margarita, with just the right amount of ingredients to give it that extra kick that it needs. I would say that tacos are my favorite food, but that seems to limit the broad range of all Mexican dishes. Something about the flavoring that is used speaks to my taste buds and provides me with an immensely satisfying dining experience.

Structured Fun

Nuclear Lesbian Family

My family has always been well-run and structured, but avoids becoming uptight by making sure fun and togetherness are both interjected. When I was young we often stuck to strict schedules – homework had to be completed at a specific time, and dinner was promptly at 7PM. But things changed as I got older and my parents allowed me more freedom. All of this was interjected with unforgettable outings and great vacations that brought us together as a family. Today, I credit my polite demeanor with the structure that I was raised with, as I was always taught to respect my elders before getting respect back from them. I believe that structure is an essential part of a strong family unit.

Preppy and Professional

Monday, 16. August 2010 5:26

A graduate of a private high school, I was always used to dressing in my best and looking nice for the general public when I went out into the world. This carried over into college and eventually everyday life, when I tried to maintain a classy and well-kept look. Polo shirts are a requirement often for casual wear, with an alternating round of khaki pants, jeans and plaid shorts. Flip flops are acceptable during the summer, but generally dress shoes or nice tennis shoes are the norm. I feel as if maintaining this style will eventually help me prosper as I climb the corporate ladder in the professional world.

Gmail Fan

Wednesday, 11. August 2010 4:24

I’ve gone through many different email addresses, initially starting with a childish moniker on Hotmail before sampling different services, such as Yahoo! But I have finally found my permanent email provider in Gmail, which is easily the most efficient and well-run service I have used thus far. It is easy to organize, the display is efficient, and it offers many other amenities such as a chat and calendar function. It synchs up well with my SmartPhone which is simply an added bonus. I’ll never look back at the clunky Hotmail display again as long as Gmail is still in business.

Disaster Date

Sunday, 8. August 2010 3:24

The worst date I have ever had would actually be back in high school, when I was accompanied to a school dance. The whole thing seemed very exciting at first – a limo was rented, new clothes were purchased, flowers were obtained – but this didn’t change the fact that my date and I essentially had nothing in common. Dinner together was mostly shrouded in a cool silence, and when the dance finally came we found ourselves eventually parting ways. There were no hard feelings, but it just goes to show you that not every date is perfect. A first date is about getting to know the person and seeing if you’re compatible. In this case, the answer was a resounding no.

Understanding

friend

The term best friend is one that is thrown around loosely in many circles. Gone is the notion of having ‘one best friend’ and many people consider 4 or 5 people as their “best friend” in this day and age. In my opinion, a best friend doesn’t have to be someone with the exact same interests as you. That isn’t what is important. What is important is the idea of understanding – they are able to relate to you on another level and that brings you closer together. They are there for you in the good times and the bad, and can make you feel better in even the worst situations.

AT&T And The Tale of Dropped Phone Calls

Monday, 2. August 2010 1:21

I am a notorious loser of phones. I have gone through at least ten phones in the past three years and every time I feel as if I have to go through an endless saga with AT&T, my current wireless carrier. It seems impossible for them to compute that accidents happen, evidenced by the exorbitant charges that come without signing a contract. iPhones, Blackberrys, Razrs, I have had them all. But one common component in all of these phones, other than the overpricing factor, is that there are a significant number of dropped calls every time. AT&T promotes themselves as the service with the most coverage across the globe, but I can’t even count the number of times a conversation has been interrupted by loss of service. The current problems with the iPhone 4 only illustrate this fact even further.
