About fire retardant spray

Sunday, 13. November 2011 6:39

Fire retardant spray is used to reduce the fire risk from normally inflammable materials such as wood or fabric. This is one of the fire prevention strategies used to reduce the risk from fire in buildings, personal or occupational clothing. Fire prevention is classified as class A, B etc. based on the effectiveness of the fire preventive material used. These materials would slow the spread of fire and requires higher temperature to catch fire once sprayed on to normal wood or fabric, there by rendering them less susceptible to the fire risk. Fire retardant sprays are used in doors, windows, furniture, paneling, tapestry, paperboard etc. made out of normally combustible materials to render them inert to fire. Once coated with the spray, such materials will be reduced to ash by the high heat without burning. One of the important properties for use of such materials in public buildings or homes is that the material used in the fire retardant spray should not emit any toxic substances due to high heat encountered in fire.

Fire Exit Doors and Safety

Monday, 17. October 2011 4:56

These doors are not for regular use and are marked Fire Exit Only or something to that effect. They are also almost always equipped with door panic bars – a metal device that extends horizontally across the inside of the door, that, when pushed toward the door, allows to the door to easily open so that those in danger may quickly exit. They are usually a metallic gray color and positioned about waist high on the door. A person hurrying toward the door simply pushes the panic bar in and voila! Open sesame! The door opens and out the person goes. The panic bar is a simple but ingenious device that has saved and will save many lives. Anyone not familiar with the panic bar should take note whenever he next sees a fire door.

A Fire Hose Is Not a Toy

Monday, 18. July 2011 18:56

I have been good friends with Jon for years, and was proud of the fact that he was a fireman for the city of Baltimore. One summer it was especially hot, and we were hanging out on our porch located right down the street from the firehouse. I got out our old hose and sprinkler from the storage shed, and we set it up and spent the afternoon running back and forth through it in our yard. The kids down the street had the same idea, but didn’t have their own set up to do the same that we did. Instead, one of the kids snuck into the front doors of the firehouse in order to grab a hose and run back out the front. It was lucky that John caught them, and informed them about the high pressure that a fire hose reel gives out when hooked up to a fire hydrant- much different than our set up in the yard! I’m just glad John caught them and no one ended up hurt- except for the boys who had a few more community service hours than they started out with!

How to safely extinguish an electrical fire

Thursday, 14. July 2011 7:58

There are several different types of class A fire extinguishers in use today including water, foam, CO2 and dry powder which can be used to extinguish fires. However, when dealing with any fire involving electricity it is important to use a CO2 or dry chemical powder extinguisher as the use of water or foam extinguishers poses a significant risk of electrocution. If the electricity supply to an electrical fire can be isolated then the fire can be treated as a normal fire with water or foam extinguishers. However, dealing with fires should always be left to professional firefighters unless it can be safely extinguished without any risk to personal safety
